Target Software Boosts Microsoft's iSCSI Support

Microsoft formally began supporting iSCSI more than two years ago when it included iSCSI initiator support in Windows Server 2003. However, Microsoft didn't release its own version for the other half of the equation, iSCSI target software, until July 2006, when Microsoft released the iSCSI target technology it acquired from String Bean Software in early 2006. The target software, called Microsoft iSCSI Software Target, is available as the Microsoft iSCSI Software Target Application Pack and only through OEMs selling Windows Storage Server and Windows Unified Data Storage Server 2003. By adding the iSCSI Software Target Software Application Pack to either of the Microsoft storage server offerings, a user could provide an end-to-end Microsoft solution for deploying an iSCSI-based storage network.

Fonterra fixes cheese software

Fonterra says it has fixed the software problems that have disrupted supplies of Mainland, Galaxy and Kapiti cheeses to retailers across New Zealand. However, the company's director of international manufacturing, Max Parkin, says it may take a few weeks before a backlog of orders is cleared and supermarket shelves are fully restocked. The Independent Financial Review reported on Wednesday that notices apologising for empty shelves were posted in Foodtown supermarkets. Mr Parkin says the root of the problem was an upgrade to the information systems responsible for managing secondary processing in its cheese plants, when cheese is cut into blocks or shredded or sliced and then packaged. These are now being standardised on an SAP platform. "We have been updating our IT systems to bring them into line with the systems throughout the rest of Fonterra and we put in a new planning system.

Although we have the latest in ‘teaching' tools, we need to instruct our students in the latest ‘learning' tools," he said in an e-mail. Luckily, one teacher at Naples High School had been exposed to course management software and was excited about its possibilities. VMware Creates a Community-Supported Hardware and Software List

One of the limitations of the VMware ESX Server product that competitors always point the finger at is VMware's limited list of supported hardware and software. The competition claims that VMware's need for a hardware compatibility list (HCL) puts VMware at a disadvantage since the competitor products can be installed on top of most hardware without the need for special drivers. Of course, this "problem" hasn't taken the wind out of VMware's sails (or sales) yet! Customers of VMware have quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) complained about this limitation before, especially when it comes to non-production activities such as testing. As an example, consumers want to install and operate ESX Server on non-SCSI disks (such as using cheaper SATA drives) to make the server cheaper for development and testing scenarios.
